Leadership: I served 5 years on the Planning and Zoning Commission, examining and evaluating land-use issues within the city both small and large, and determining the highest and best use of properties before the Commission. Cases ranged from simple single-family platting requests to large-scale projects such as the Great Wolf Lodge. While on the P&Z I was a strong supporter of the city's historic preservation efforts. I am currently serving a 2-year term on GCISD's District Excellence Committee as the parent representative for Dove Elementary, examining issues that affect the district as a whole, such as the annual budget presentation and overview of the current bond program. Experience: In addition to my recent positions, I was elected twice to the Roanoke City Council, serving from 1999-2001, including a term as Mayor pro tem. At that time Roanoke was already facing the prospect of gas drilling, the impact of the Highway 114/377 road construction project, and fast-paced development. I supported reasonable limits on drilling operations and wrote the city's landscape ordinance. I also served on the Roanoke P&Z, including a term as Vice-Chair, and on the Roanoke 4B Economic Development Board. During my tenure in Roanoke the police and fire departments received upgraded facilities and equipment, which I whole-heartedly supported. As a former Park Ranger for the Corps of Engineers at Grapevine Lake(7 1/2 years), I am very familiar with the opportunities and challenges large parks bring to the city, including multiple recreation venues, control of criminal activity and dealing with nature itself, as we saw in 2007. Vision: I actively participate in our community by volunteering with the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce's Women's Division and the Dove Elementary PTA, and I attended Leadership Grapevine this fall. I have also volunteered in many Keep Grapevine Beautiful lakeshore cleanups, and the Main Street Days and Grapefest festivals. I appreciate the stability of Grapevine and love the quality of life. At the same time, I will bring a fresh perspective to meet the many challenges ahead of Grapevine: managing transportation projects such as the Funnel and rail, monitoring both ongoing and future development, continuing support for residents' day-to-day concerns, and maintaining high levels of city services. |
